Key Concept 3:
Assessment with Technology
3.1 Candidates will be able to apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.
Throughout the course of this program, I have learned about and used multiple means of assessments and evaluations through the use of technology. Below are three examples I have used in my classroom to evaluate my students: Kahoot, Socrative, and Padlet. These assessment tools allow teachers to formatively and summatively assess students. I have used these digital tools in both ways. In the example below, I used Kahoot to review for a science test on our Safe Racer unit. I used Socrative as an exit ticket during a math lesson to plan for instruction the next day. Lastly, I used Padlet to have students answer a reflection question stating their opinion on a given topic after an ELA lesson. Kahoot and Socrative also make it easy to collect results by allowing teachers to export data from the site into an Excel document. Student names have been blacked out for privacy purposes.
3.2 Candidates will be able to use technology to collect assessment data, analyze it, and improve student learning.
The above artifacts shown in 3.1 have been utilized in my classroom to plan instruction. In the past, I have used Padlet as a way to end a lesson one day and begin a lesson the following day based upon responses. I have also used Kahoot and Socrative as engaging tools to formatively assess student knowledge throughout units. Specifically, in the example below, I used data from an exit ticket on Socrative to plan the activities the next day. I used this data to form three groups within my math class based upon their answers. Students were either part of the reteach group, the practice group, or the enrichment group.
3.3 Candidates will be able to use technology to communicate assessment data with others.
Just this year, BCPS switched to the use of Schoology, which is a new learning management system (LMS) that allows teachers to track progress and communicate grades to students and parents in a timely manner through the live gradebook. The gradebook makes it easy for teachers to print and export class or individual reports as needed. In years past, BCPS has used Engrade as our LMS, which also included a live gradebook feature. Below is a screenshot of what the gradebook looks like. Names are blacked out for privacy purposes.
